A half-volley is a kind of football-controlled kick frequently used by players, yet mostly done by the goalkeeper which requires the ball to bounce from the ground. Then, when the goalkeeper half-volleyed the ball, they will pass it over to the mid-fielder until the ball had reached the striker. Each position has its style and modification to effectively pass the ball one to another until they can strike a goal.
How a Goalkeeper Does the Half-Volley?
Since they are the score bearers of the team, they have to realize that they can only initiate a half-volley if they have the ball in their hands. They can toss the ball once up in the air to examine the height they're comfortable with and take a step as they toss the ball in a diagonal direction. When the ball is about 10cm off the ground, they have to angle their foot at 30° and let their kicking leg controllably throw the ball.
What Does the Midfielder Contribution?
The midfielders are the ones who take control closely in the field, where their job is to pass the ball to their teammates. Their pass needs to be precise enough to be able to successfully land on the receiver's foot while the defender is doing a brute job to defend the midfielder. The midfielder has to make sure that he is at least three footsteps away from the ball to execute the half-volley before starting running.
Half-Volley as an Offensive Kick
This kick plays a vital role in each game, especially with players with aggressive drive in winning. If this technique is used offensively, then it has more possibilities for scoring straight goals. Doing half-volley will come as an advantage when the player thinks there's no need for them to trap the ball with his foot. Players have to take note to have good eyesight and concentration level as it requires excellent foot-eye coordination and timing.
Half-Volley as a Defensive Technique
This technique is always useful in clearing balls that are bouncing towards the defender. Many players are using this kick to clear the ball and allow the opposing team to score as they try to recover their positions. Therefore, there is no need for the trap the ball and they only need to intently change the ball's course.
