Chip

In football, a chip refers to a high trajectory shot by a player. The intention is to make the ball go over the goalkeeper heading straight into the goal. Also known as a drop shot, the player kicks the ball underneath in an accurate manner, but uses less force. This is to ensure that the ball launches high into the air passing over the heads of its opponents.

Reasons to Use Chip in Football

Using a chip method when scoring a goal is a technique used by players for several reasons. Aside from kicking the ball over the head of the opposing side, it is used when passing the ball to its fellow members by avoiding getting into contact with the defending team. It is the fastest way of passing the ball by getting past the opposing side easily. Sometimes players use this technique if they want to trick a goalie into thinking that the ball is headed towards them, but instead, it went overhead towards the goal.

How to Chip a Soccer Ball?

Using the chip technique takes a lot of practice to perfect the skill. Some players usually make a mistake when they force the ball into chipping. When they scoop the ball, the use too much force when kicking the ball. As a result, the ball will go farther than your intended distance. Before thinking of using such a technique during the game, the player must get the basics covered.

When you approach the ball, plant your non-kicking foot firmly on the side of the ball, at least half a foot. The player’s toe should be angled downward and keep the foot low to be able to scoop beneath the ball properly, either from the side or straight ahead. Launch the ball upward in a swift motion but should not use a forceful kick. The player should slightly lean its body backward when scooping and launching the ball upward. This will result in a powerful chip, while at the same time improve the thrust of the ball.

If the player plans to trick the opposing team, he should rush up to the ball as though he is planning to kick normally. Then, the player should immediately revert to its chipping form to launch the ball upward. This technique is perfect if the player is trying to get the ball towards the net.
