Dissent is a football term that refers to a player breaking the laws of the game by using offensive gesture or language towards an official. This behavior of a player can result in the issuing of yellow or red cards.
Significance of Handling Dissent Properly
Dissent is being penalized because it is both disruptive to the game and the players as well as destructive to how the game is controlled. With this, it can be said that if it is not controlled properly, it can have a long-range effect or impact on a tournament.Due to the significance of handling dissent in the proper way, referees need to understand that they play a major role to stop it. They need to understand that they will not only consider themselves when it comes to the effects of the dissent but also other officials who will referee future games. It must be remembered that an official who allows the behavior to continue actually encourages it. Lack of consistency in apprehending players who succumbed to this kind of behavior can unfair to both fellow officials and the players.
Rules in Handling Dissent
There are five main rules or guidelines that referees must follow in handling dissent. The first one is to remember that a dissent should not be compared to a disagreement. This means that a player can actually express an opinion that is different from that of the referee and not be penalized for dissent, especially when said in a polite fashion.The second rule looks intro emotional outbursts that are not premeditated. The rule says that this can be acknowledged as a non-dissent if it is not destructive to the game and is short in duration. It can be called a dissent if the said outburst is repeated multiple times even after the player was warned already.
Third rule is also on non-premeditated emotional outburst. If this outburst is destructive to game and continues on, the rule is to give a warning for the second outburst and a red card or sending player off if a third outburst happens.
Another rule when it comes to dissent looks into a premeditated one. This kind must be cautioned which means that the player will be warned and if he or she does it again, he or she will be sent off.
Last but not the least is when the dissent involves abusive, insulting or offensive language, then the punishment should be more serious. Players who commit this offence will automatically be sent off without any warnings.
