Fergie time is a terminology used in English football to describe a good amount of time added at the end of match, usually right after an injury, which seems to favor a specific team. This allows more time for a team to score a winner or create a late equalizer.
Manchester United
It is said that the final minutes of a match is the most crucial part especially if teams are tied. Players of both teams during this time are desperate for victory. This specific time was known to be abused by the team of Sir Alex Ferguson, the famous manager of Manchester United. According to accounts, Ferguson and his team were often perceived to be enjoying extra time goals or “Fergie Time”. Fergie here, is the nickname used for Ferguson. It is widely known that Ferguson and the Manchester United created and continuously used and abused the term and its provisions.
Top Five Fergie Time Moments
Since the creation of the term Fergie Time in the early 1990s, there have been several competitions where this had been witnessed by football enthusiasts, players and officials.
First on the list of top Fergie time moments is during the 1998-1999 season when Manchester United defeated Barcelona two to one. This event is said to be the most famous incident that showcased Fergie time that allowed Manchester United to take home the Champions League Crown. It was said that the team was lagging behind Barcelona when Mario Basler made an early goal. The score was later levelled by Manchester’s Teddy Sherrington which was then made into a win when Ole Gunmar Solskjaer scored at the last minute, after an injury was called.
Second on the list was when Manchester United took the win against Manchester City in the 2009 to 2010 season. During this game, United was winning in the lead during most of the game. Unfortunately for them, Craig Bellamy made a score to call for a draw, but United called for injury time before their very own Michael Owen scored a goal.
Third and fourth on the list were the games between Manchester United and Liverpool as well as Aston Villa. Manchester United competed with Liverpool during the season in 1998-1999. This allowed Manchester to win two against one. Manchester United also played against Aston Villa in 2008-2009 season. During this game, Manchester earned three points against the two points of Aston Villa with the help of Federico Macheda after scoring a goal during an added time. Many of the comments that described the game shared that another Fergie Time was called.
Last but definitely the least was in the 2009-2010 season when Manchester City and Manchester United faced off. Manchester won the game after a third-minute of injury time was called.
