A goal-line refers to the line drawn on the shorter end of the pitch. They are drawn from one corner flag to another where the goalposts are situated. These posts are strategically positioned in the middle area of the two flags.
Purpose of Goal-Line
According to the governing rules of football, to determine the outcome of the match, a player needs to score a goal at the opponent’s goal post. The score is determined when the whole ball passes over the goal-line towards the goalposts. The ball needs to be under the crossbar for a goal to count. If the ball passes over the crossbar, then no score will be counted as it is considered out of bounds.Keep in mind that if you want to score a goal, make sure that the entire ball passes through the goal-line. If the ball touches at least several inches of the line, it will not be counted as a goal.
The Invention of Goal-Line Technology
To determine if a goal has been made across the goal line or not, can sometimes be confusing and referees will have a hard time awarding whether it was a goal or not. The goal-line technology is an electronic device that aids the officials in determining whether the goal was scored or not. Once a ball passes through the goal line and between the goalposts, the system provides a clear indication of the ball managed to successfully cross the line. The purpose of goal-line technology is not to replace the referees, but to assist them. However, since this system is costly, it is only used during major league events. Since 2014, all major international competitions and top European domestic leagues had been using this device.
