In football, a goal line technology is being used, an electronic device that aids in determining whether a goal is indeed scored or not. The technology also aids the referee in awarding a goal or not. The technology is also sometimes referred to as the Goal Decision System. It identifies whether a ball completely crossed the goal line during a match, in between the goal post and below the crossbar of the goal area. It is not a replacement for the officials of the game but support in creating better decisions during a football match.
The Recent Addition of the Goal Decision System in Football
The GLT is a recent addition to professional football. The system was initially doubted and many officials tried to defy the addition of this technology to the game. It was welcomed to the International Football Association Board and approved by this body in 2012. The rules of the game were also amended to be able to include the goal-line technology to the professional football game. The system is quite expensive, thus it was only used during the most prestigious and the highest levels of the game. The system is currently being used in the premier European domestic leagues as well as major international competitions. Goal line technology has been used in the Men and Women's FIFA World Cups since 2014.
Official Football Rules Related to the Goal Line Technology
Modifications of the goal frame in Law 1 of the Rules of Football includes information about the goal line technology. Law 2 on the other hand includes the use of approved balls that can be integrated with the goal line technology that is not being used in premier football games. Law 5 includes the referee’s access to testing the efficiency of the goal-line technology before any official football match. If a fault is found, the system will be rechecked and recalibrated to pass the referees' standards. Law 10 of the Rules of Football permits the use of GLT to be able to determine whether a goal is indeed a valid goal during a match. The use of this new technology will be used with respect to the existing game rules.
