Clean Sheet

Clean Sheet

In soccer, Clean Sheet is a term that describes a game where a team managed to prevent its opposition from scoring any goals. A team maintained a clean sheet when they don’t concede a goal during the said game. The no-score-draw scenario makes it possible for both teams to keep a “clean sheet”. In American soccer, the term is commonly called “shutout”. For the British, they referred to it as a “clean sheet”. In other sports, shutouts are likely used.

Origins of Clean Sheet

The origin of the term is unknown however many believed that it comes from the era where scores are written on paper. If a team failed to achieve a goal then the sheet of paper is blank. The paper is fresh and often described as a clean sheet. During the 1930s, reporters are using pieces of paper. Teams who didn’t allow goals to be scored then the details on the “goals conceded’ column would be left blank or clean.

Do you have a Clean Sheet?

The likelihood of a non-scoring game varies from sports to skill level. High scoring games like rugby or basketball are unlikely to have a game without a score. For this reason, a clean sheet will not be achieved. Aside from soccer, ice hockey, baseball and football are more likely to get this term at the games. These sports have teams where they cancel out each other defensively.

Clean Sheet in Soccer

Clean sheet occurrence depends on the team and the nature of the soccer game. There are some teams that are rarely challenged and yet concede a goal. There are also some teams that are defensive and keep their opponents out.
