Tromso IL is a Norwegian football club based in Tromso. They currently feature in the Norwegian Premier League.
Tromso were established on September 15,1920 as Tromso Gymnastics Association’s Football Team. They won their first district championship in 1927.
In 1930 the club altered their name to Tromso Idrettslag and then to Tor in 1931, the same year they won their first Northern Norwegian Cup. One year later they had reverted to “Tromso Idrettslag”.
Between 1950 and 1954, Tromso won the district championships for five successive seasons and emerged triumphant in the Northern Norwegian Cup in 1956. Tromso featured in the Norwegian Cup in 1964 for the first time.
Tromso IL featured in the top division in Norway in 1986 and remained in the top flight until 2001. They won the Norwegian Cup in 1986 and 1996. In 2001, however, they were relegated from the Premier Division for the first time in history but returned in 2003.
Tromso IL play their home matches at the Alfheim Stadion that can accommodate 7,500 spectators. They bear the nicknames “Gutan”.

Tromso IL won their second district championship in 1932 and won the championship again in 1933,1936 and 1937. They won the competition in 1946 too and in 1949 won their second Northern Norwegian Cup.
