Strasbourg won the French league in 1979 and has won the French Cup on three occasions, most recently in 2001.
The club has a long history in the French Ligue 1, however, Strasbourg fell down the divisions to the fifth tier after going into financial liquidation in 2010-11. They gradually regained their status and won Ligue 2 in 2016-17 to earn promotion to the top flight under head coach Thierry Laurey.
In 2019, Strasbourg won the Coupe de la Ligue under Laurey with a 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Guingamp in the final. Laurey led the club from 2016 to 2021 after a difficult 2020-2021 season where they narrowly avoided relegation.
Julien Stephan was hired and led Strasbourg to a sixth-place finish in the 2021-2022 Ligue 1 season.
