Defensa y Justicia is a prominent Argentine soccer team based in Florencio Varela, Buenos Aires. Known formally as Club Social y Deportivo Defensa y Justicia, this club has carved out a name for itself in Argentina's competitive football landscape. Founded in 1935, Defensa has steadily climbed the ranks to establish itself at the highest level of national football.

History

The club was established on March 20, 1935, by a group of local enthusiasts eager to create a community team. Initially, Defensa y Justicia played in local leagues but did not enter official tournaments until 1978, when they made their debut in the Primera D, achieving victory against Cañuelas. Their swift ascent through the divisions is marked by significant milestones, such as winning the Primera C Metropolitana championship in 1982 and later moving up to the Primera B and then the Primera B Nacional.

In May 2014, Defensa y Justicia reached the Primera División, the pinnacle of Argentine soccer. Since then, the club has enjoyed considerable success, including their historic triumph in the 2020 Copa Sudamericana, where they defeated fellow Argentine team Club Atlético Lanús. Their prowess did not stop there; they later secured the 2021 Recopa Sudamericana, triumphing over Palmeiras after a nail-biting penalty shootout.

Stadium

Defensa y Justicia plays its home matches at the Estadio Norberto "Tito" Tomaghello, which has a seating capacity of around 18,000 fans. This stadium, a cornerstone of the club, was inaugurated during a friendly match against the Boca Juniors reserve team in December 1977. The atmosphere is electric on match days, with passionate fans known as "Los Halcones de Varela" filling the stands to support their team.

Honours

Defensa y Justicia has enjoyed a series of achievements that highlight its growth and resilience. Major titles include the Copa Sudamericana and the Recopa Sudamericana, both of which have showcased the club's ability to compete on both local and continental stages. The team continues to strive for excellence, building on its legacy and aiming for future successes as it establishes itself as a formidable contender in Argentine football.
