The Saudi Arabia national football team, often referred to as al-Akhdar (The Green) or al-Sogour (The Falcons), is a prominent force in Asian soccer. Established in 1956, the team is governed by the Saudi Arabia Football Federation and is currently helmed by head coach Jose Peseiro. Leading the team on the field is captain Hussein Sulaimani.

Over the years, the team has produced some remarkable players, including Mohamed Al-Deayea, who holds the record for the most international appearances by any male football player, with an impressive 181 caps. The all-time leading scorer for the national team is Majed Abdullah, who netted 67 goals during his career. The team's home matches are played at the iconic King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, and they currently sit at 68th in the FIFA rankings.

History

The Saudi team made its mark on the international stage during the 1994 World Cup, where they advanced to the Round of 16 after a memorable victory over Morocco and a fierce match against Belgium. Since then, however, their World Cup journey has been challenging; they faced early exits in subsequent tournaments, including in 1998 and 2002. Notably, they did not qualify for the World Cup from 1962 to 1974 or from 1978 to 1990, making their 1994 qualification a significant achievement.

Honours

The team is celebrated as one of Asia's most successful footballing nations, boasting three Asian Cup titles, which they secured in 1984, 1988, and 1996. Their prowess in regional tournaments is also highlighted by their three championships in the Gulf Cup of Nations during 1994, 2002, and 2003. Throughout their history in the Gulf Cup, they have consistently performed well, finishing as runners-up on several occasions and often placing in the top three.

The Saudi Arabia national football team's journey reflects a rich tapestry of triumphs and challenges, and their legacy continues to inspire the next generation of players in the Kingdom. With a passionate fanbase and a commitment to growth, they are poised to make further strides in both regional and international competitions.
