Aris Thessaloniki FC is a Greek football club based in Thessaloniki. They currently feature in the Super League Greece and are one of the biggest Greek clubs, having won the league thrice and the Cup once.
Aris Thessaloniki were established on March 25,1914 by a group of 12 young friends in a coffee bar in Thessaloniki. They got their name from Aris the God of War. At the time there was no professional football league in Greece and Aris played in the local league and were consistently successful too.
Aris won their first national championship in 1928 and won the title again in 1932. Aris’s third national title came in 1946 and that was the only national championship held during the Greek Civil War.
After the mid-1980s Aris suffered a gradual decline and were relegated to the second division in 1994. They returned to the Greek top flight only to go down again, this time in 1997. Aris bounced back to the Super League Greece but dropped down to the second division again in 2005. But Aris returned and restored their old glory, featuring in the UEFA Cup in 2008.
