FC Metalist Kharkiv is a Ukrainian football club based in Kharkiv. They currently feature in the Ukrainian Premier League.
FC Metalist Kharkiv were established in 1925 and have undergone a number of name alterations. They were started when a local train construction facility allowed funding and its territory for a football club to be set-up.
Kharkiv won their first title ten years later when they won the Kharkiv championship and entered the USSR Cup the following season. In 1947 they gained promotion to the Soviet Second League B but were relegated after just three seasons.
Metalist struggled after that but eventually regained Soviet First League status in 1978 and two years later finished third in the table. They won the First League in 1981 and were promoted to the Soviet Top League.
Metalist were also one of the founding members of the Ukrainian Premier League in 1992 and finished fifth in the league that season. They would go on to establish themselves as a (more or less) regular top flight club in Ukraine.
