Established in 1915, one of the older teams in the country is FBC Melgar, a Peruvian football team based out of Arequipoa. The team was inducted into the Peruvian football league system in 1919 but it wasn’t until 1966 that they were actually allowed to participate in the national championships. With a capacity of 40,000 the Estadio de la UNSA has been the home for Melgar since 1990 although the club still continues to use the Estadio Mariano Melgar for most matches, due to the cheaper running costs.

In 1981, FBC Melgar won the Primera Division Peruana title while in 1983, they came second. In 1971, they were winners of the Copa Peru while in the Copa Libertadores, their two showings in 1982 and 1984 have seen them get knocked out at the first round itself. In the Copa CONMEBOL also, they have just had one appearance in 1998, another first round defeat.
