History

Girona was founded in 1930. In 1935-36, Girona topped its group in the Segunda Division but missed out on promotion to La Liga in the playoffs.

In August 2017, City Football Group purchased 44.3% ownership in Girona.

Girona was relegated from La Liga in 2018-19 but returned after earning promotion via the playoffs in 2021-22 after a sixth-place finish.

In their return campaign to La Liga in 2022-23, Girona finished in the top half in 10th. They backed that up with an outstanding season under head coach Michel, finishing third in 2023-24 Girona. Girona secured qualification to the UEFA Champions League in 2024-25 with a 4-2 victory over Barcelona.

Nickname

Girona are known as the Blanquivermells which translates to the white and reds, while they’re also known as Gironistes as per the city.

In both 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, Girona missed out on promotion to La Liga in the playoffs, but reached the top flight after finishing Segunda Division runners-up in 2016-17, reaching La Liga for the first time in their history.
