Mats Julian Hummels was born on December 16, 1988, in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia. The German defender stands 191 cm (6 ft 3 in) tall.

His father, Hermann, was a professional footballer and manager, while his mother, Ulla Holthoff, was a professional water polo player. His younger brother, Jonas, was also a footballer but retired early due to injuries.

In his personal life, Hummels was married to Cathy Fischer, with whom he has a son born in 2018; their divorce was finalized in 2022. Since late 2023, he has been in a relationship with model Nicola Cavanis.

Known for his social conscience, he joined the Common Goal Project in 2017, pledging 1% of his salary to support social development through football organizations.

Career

Hummels rose through the Bayern Munich Youth Academy but made his name at Borussia Dortmund, where he initially moved on loan before signing permanently. He became a defensive pillar for Dortmund, making over 500 appearances and helping the club win two Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokals. He also played a crucial role in Dortmund's runs to the UEFA Champions League final in both 2013 and 2024, finishing as a runner-up on both occasions.

In 2016, Hummels returned to Bayern Munich, where he enjoyed a highly successful three-year stint, winning the Bundesliga title in every season he played there. He eventually returned to Dortmund in 2019. After a final season in Italy with Roma, he announced his retirement from professional football in 2025.

Internationally, Hummels earned over 70 caps for the Germany National Team between 2010 and 2023. He was a key figure in the squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and also represented his nation at the 2018 World Cup and multiple UEFA European Championships.
