Jay Michael DeMerit is a professional American football player who is currently without a club to play for. However, he is best known for being the team captain of Watford F.C., and for being a member of the United States national team. Born on December 4, 1979, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States, DeMerit was a three-sport athlete in his hometown, where he played track and basketball other football.
DeMerit played college football while studying at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he started off as a forward, but was later assigned as a defender. During that time, he was a part of a defensive backline that was integral in leading the team to the 2000 NCAA playoffs.
Although DeMerit was signed by Chicago Fire Premier, which was a development team of Chicago Fire, he was not drafted by any of the Major League Soccer clubs after he graduated from college. He took the advice given by a former teammate of his, and decided to take his football playing skills to England.

DeMerit club career started with Southall where he stayed from 2003 to 2004. He then transferred to Northwood for only a year, before transferring to Watford. While in Watford, he finally made it to the top and stayed with the club from 2004 to 2010. During that time, he rose through the ranks and soon became the captain of the team.
DeMerit is also a member of the United States national team since 2007, and has made a total of 23 caps to date.
