Goodson commenced his football career with FC Dallas in the year 2004 following a successful span of three years is University football. For FC Dallas, he made seventy six appearances and scored three goals. He made a decision of playing abroad and was signed by IK Start which is a Norwegian club. In fifty two appearances made till now, Goodson has scored eleven goals for this club. He is considered as one of the tip defenders for the Norwegian league.

After his success abroad, Clarence Goodson caught the eyes of the selectors and was selected for the national team of the United States. He international debut came in a friendly played against Sweden in January 2008. He was a part of United States team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009. He grabbed a goal in the semi-final match played against Honduras. On 26th May 2010, he was selected for the U.S. squad for FIFA World Cup 2010.
