Sami Al-Jaber
Sami Abdullah Al-Jaber is a football striker from Saudi Arabia currently enjoying his retirement from playing the sport. Born on December 11, 1972, Al-Jaber is best known for being a part of Al-Hilal for the majority of his football playing career.
After Al-Jaber’s 20 years with Al-Hilal, he is often dubbed as the club’s most famous player. He actually joined the club when he was still 15 years old, and he spent two decades afterwards as a senior player for the club, helping them to champion 6 league titles, 2 Asian Champions League titles, 6 Crown Prince Cups, and other honors. In addition to this, he was also recognized as the top goalscorer twice at the Saudi Premier League.
After spending over two decades with Al-Hilal, English First Division agreed to sign Al-Jaber after he impressed the Wolverhampton Wanderers’ boss Colin Lee in a trial. The agreement consisted of a loan period of five months where they had the option to buy Al-Jaber for a reported 1.2 million pounds. At the conclusion of the agreement, Al-Jaber became known as the first Saudi Arabian football player to play in England.
However, like most international moves, Al-Jaber was filled with complications and setbacks. Clearances, injuries, and other issues had caused Al-Jaber to make 5 goal less appearances during his time at England. Although the Wolves’ had asked for an extension to further evaluate Al-Jaber, Al-Hilal would no longer agree.
Overall, Al-Jabber managed to score 44 times during 163 appearances over his 14 years playing international football. During this time, he competed in four FIFA World Cups (1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006).
