Lugano was a success in Turkey and established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Europe, playing for them until 2011 and winning the Turkish Super Lig in 2007 and 2011.
Lugano’s impressive performances for Fenerbahce saw Paris Saint-Germain snap him up in the summer of 2011 for €3 million.
However, Lugano failed to consolidate a regular place for himself in the PSG starting lineup and in January 2013 he moved to Malaga on loan for the remainder of the 2012-13 campaign.
Lugano made his international debut for Uruguay in November 2004 against Paraguay. He has since become the captain of his country and has made over 70 appearances. Lugano was part of the Uruguay team that reached the semi-finals of Copa America in 2007, the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2010 and won the Copa America in 2011.
