Braafheid began his professional career at FC Utrecht in 2003 making 8 appearances for the side and then moved to FC Twente in 2007 after four impressive seasons and the expiration of contract with Utrecht. He transferred freely to FC Bayern Munich in 2009.

In 2010 he was signed by Celtic on loan. In 2011 he moved to 1899 Hoffenheim making 23 appearances. He has also represented the National football team of Netherlands and Netherland U-21 in 2004 and 2009 respectively. Braafheid was a part of Netherlands squad that won the UEFA U-21 Championship in 2006 in Portugal.
Edson Braafheid made his international debut for the Netherlands on February 11,2009 against Tunisia.
