Senior Career
He turned pro with Boca in 2007 before he moved to play for Valencia.
In January 2008, Banega made his professional debut with Team Valencia against Atletico Madrid but lost. By the following year, he was loaned to Atletico Madrid, where he made his official debut as a substitute against PSV Eindhoven.
He was supposed to be loaned to Everton, however, due to insufficient visa requirements, the plan of loaning him to another team didn’t push through.
In February 2012, he was run over by his car, which caused a left ankle fracture and a broken tibia and fibula. Unfortunately, this required him to undergo ankle surgery, and missed the remainder of the season.
His team clarified that Banega was hurt by his car, contrary to Spanish media reports that Banega failed to put the handbrake on which resulted in his leg being trapped between the wheel and the curb.
In 2014, he decided to join Sevilla under Unai Emery, and he made his debut by replacing Aleix Vidal against Valencia. It was a productive year for Banega as he was hailed as the player of the match during the 2015 UEFA Europa League Final. He was also the fastest player to goal in the competition.
In 2016, he signed for Inter Milan as a free agent, and he was given squad number 19. He debuted in August 2016 when he played 70 minutes on the field, yet they lost against ChievoVerona.
In 2020, he announced that he would join Al Shabab of the Saudi Professional League while being selected for the Argentine national team. He continues to play for the team as of the 2023 season.
