Gonzalo Ruben Bergessio is a professional football player from Argentina who plays as a striker. Bergessio began his career in 2001, when he joined lower division club Club Atletico Platense. He played 90 games with the team up until 2005, scoring 28 goals. In 2005, he moved to Instituto Atletico Central Cordoba, a team in the Primera Division.
At his new club, he played two seasons and spent a considerable amount of time on the bench, making appearances as a substitute. Although he did score 6 times, he was not influential enough to command a regular place in the starting lineup. In 2006, he decided to move to Racing Club, one of the big teams in the country. His ability to score vital goals shone through in the Apertura championships in 2006 when he scored 6 important goals.12 goals in all for Racing, in 35 appearances, were all Bergessio could manage before moving to Portugal, with European giants, Benfica.
In Portugal, Bergessio had a tough time adjusting to the game and only played thrice for the first team. His five year deal with Benfica was cut short after he managed to play just 3 games for the club in his first year. In 2008, he was back in Argentina and this time, he joined San Lorenzo. His blistering pace has made him a favourite with the fans wherever he has gone, especially after he helped 9-men San Lorenzo beat a full strength River Plate side in the Copa Libertadores. 2-0 down, he scored twice for San Lorenzo, sending them through on the Away Goals' rule.
