Eusebio da Silva Ferreira, GCIH, GCM is a former Portuguese international football player who used to feature prominently during the 1960s and 1970s. He played as a striker and is regarded as the best ever Portuguese player. He is the all-time top goalscorer of Portuguese powerhouse Benfica and won the European Footballer of the Year in 1965. He was named by Pele in March 2004 as one of the 125 greatest living footballer.

Eusobio was actually in Mozambique and moved to Lisbon in his late teens. In 1961 when he was 18 years old he signed for Portuguese powerhouse Benfica from Sporting Club of Lourenco Marques for 7,500 pounds. Eusobio won the European Cup with Benfica in 1962 and scored twice in the final against Real Madrid. He also led Benfica to runner-up spots in the European Cup in 1963,1965 and 1968.

Eusobio was awarded the European Footballer of the Year in 1965 and won the Golden boot in 1968 as he finished as Europe’s leading goalscorer, a feat he went onto repeat five years later. He won 11 Portuguese domestic league championships with Benfica and also won the Cup 5 times. He scored a total of 727 goals in 715 matches for Benfica in all competition; he also holds the record of scoring 317 goals in 301 Portuguese league matches for Benfica.

Eusobio subsequently went onto play for a number of minor clubs after he left Benfica in 1975 after spending 15 years with them.

Eusobio made his international debut for Benfica in 1961 and went onto play 64 international matches for his nation, scoring 41 goals. He was the leading goalscorer in the 1966 World Cup where he scored nine times. He led Portugal to the semi-finals of the competition. His last game for his nation was against Bulgaria on October 19,1973 in a World Cup qualifier.
