Carmelo Villalba is a former Argentine footballer known for playing mainly as a defender. Playing for about 15 years, Villalba played for many different clubs including some big names. However, about five of those 15 years were spent at lower division clubs, in an effort to re-ignite a dwindling career.
Starting his career at El Porvenir, Villalba was brought in by the management at Argentinos Juniors, in 1982, to add to a team that was destined to achieve great things. And that they did.
In 1984, Argentinos won the Metropolitana title to qualify for the 1995 Copa Libertadores. In 1985, they won the Primera Division title as well as the Copa Libertadores and even the Copa Interamericana trophy. In 1988, Villalba shifted out of Argentinos Juniors and came to Union de Santa Fe for a season before finally deciding to ply the remaining years in the lower division. At Galaxia de Iguazu, Chacarita Juniors, Tigre and Tristan Suarez, Villalba spent his final years playing at lesser clubs, still staying in the game despite being past his prime. Post-retirement as a player, Villalba became a coach in the youth ranks of the Argentinos Juniors club.
