Dean Whitehead is an English football player who currently features for the English Premier League club Sunderland. He is a versatile footballer who can feature both as a midfielder and as a right back. Whitehead is the current captain of Sunderland.
Dean Whitehead started his club career at Oxford United in the lower tiers of the English football league pyramid in 1999. He was a hugely influential figure for Oxford United and scored 9 goals in 122 matches for Oxford United and signed for Sunderland in the summer of 2004 on a free transfer.
Since then Dean Whitehead has developed to be a key player for Sunderland and has played in over 150 league appearances that includes matches both in the Premiership and outside the top flight. Whitehead was made the captain for the 2006-2007 season when Sunderland were relegated to the Championship and Whitehead has been the captain of Sunderland since then.
