Paul Josef Herbert Scharner is an Austrian international football player who currently features for the English Premier League club Wigan Athletic. He plays as a central defender.
Paul Scharner commenced his professional club football at Austrian powerhouse Austria Wien in 1998 and scored 3 goals in 84 league matches between 1998 and 2004. He won the Austrian Football Bundesliga in 2003 and the Austrian Cup that very same year with his club.
In 2004 he moved to Norwegian giants SV Salzburg and won the Norwegian Cup that year. He was then signed by Austrian side SK Brann and played just 32 league matches between 2004 and 2006 for them and scored 7 goals. He was voted “Player of the Year” by the Brann supporters in 2005.

In 2006 Wigan Athletic signed Paul Scharner for 3.7 million euros on a three-and-a-half year contract. He has been a regular since then for Wigan.
