Virgil van Dijk is a soccer player playing for Liverpool. He is a central defender and represents the Netherlands national team. He finished as runner-up in the 2019 FIFA Ballon d’Or.
Club Career
Van Dijk spent his youth career with both Willem II and Groningen in his native Netherlands, before joining Celtic in 2013 where he was part of a successful side which won back-to-back league titles. He was twice named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year during his time in Scotland.
The Dutchman moved south of the border in 2015 to join Southampton where he won the club’s Player of the Season award in 2015-16.

After two-and-a-half years at Southampton, van Dijk was signed by Liverpool for a reported fee of 75 million pounds. He’s since excelled, being voted the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2018-19 as Liverpool finished runners-up, before playing a leading role as the Reds lifted the title in 2019-20.
He’s gone to make more than 250 appearances for Liverpool, being named in the Premier League PFA Team of the Year in 2018-19, 2019-20, 2021-22 and 2023-24.
International Career
Van Dijk debuted for the Netherlands in 2015. He’s played more than 70 times for his country, including captaining the Dutch at the 2022 World Cup and playing at Euro 2024.
