Mathew Ryan is a soccer player playing for Australia and Danish club FC Copenhagen.

Ryan is a goalkeeper who has enjoyed a long career in Europe after impressing in Australia’s A-League with Central Coast Mariners where he twice won the league’s Young Footballer of the Year.

In 2013, he left the Mariners to join Belgian club Club Brugge where he quickly established himself as first choice and won the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year in both 2013-14 and 2014-15. He also helped Brugge win the 2015 Belgian Cup.

In 2015, Ryan signed a six-year contract with Spanish club Valencia but struggled for regular games and, after a loan stint back in Belgium with Genk in 2017, he opted to move to English Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2017 on a five-year deal.

Ryan was Brighton’s first-choice goalkeeper for two Premier League seasons, but fell out of favour in late 2020 with Graham Potter preferring Robert Sanchez. Ryan opted to move to Arsenal on loan in January 2021 where he was used sparingly again.

In July 2021, he moved to Spanish club Real Sociedad but again struggled for games. After 12 months in Spain, he signed with Danish club FC Copenhagen where he hoped to regular game-time ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Ryan has long been Australia’s number one goalkeeper and played at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and was part of the side which won the 2015 Asian Cup. He has also captained the Socceroos.
