Guillermo Varela is a young Uruguayan football player who currently features for the English and European giants Manchester United. He plays as a right-back and is rated as one of the best young defenders in the world.
Varela developed at the youth academy of Uruguayan giants Penarol and made his debut for the club in 2010. He was on their books for three years, but made just one first-team appearance – in a 1-0 home defeat to Racing Club de Montevideo in the league on June 5, 2011.
In May 2013 Varela impressed the Manchester United bosses on a two-week trial and signed them on a five-year contract in the following month, with the Premier League giants reported to have paid Penarol €2.8 million for him.
Varela is yet to make his debut for the Uruguay senior national team, but he has featured for his country at Under-17 and Under-20 levels.
