He was just 9 when he starting playing at the academy and for the next ten years, Ibson was part of the Flamengo youth squads, rising through the ranks until he broke into the first team in 2003. Ibson was considered one of the brightest prospects in Brazilian football and he immediately made an impact on the first team.

Within a single year, Ibson had cemented a place for himself in the Flamengo first team and had made over 50 appearances by 2005, scoring 6 goals along the way. He was picked up by Portuguese powerhouse, FC Porto who brought him over on his reputation. After 2 seasons at Porto, Ibson had made 46 appearances and picked up two league winners’ medals and a cup medal in 2005-06, but failed to impress the coaching staff to warrant a stay. He was sent out on loan to Flamengo during which time he made over 60 appearances and scored 17 goals.

After seeing out is Porto contract with two years on loan to Flamengo, Ibson was sold to Spartak Moskva where he spent two seasons playing around 45 games and scoring three times.
