Born on January 5, 1984, in Austin, Texas, Joshua Vincent Alcala is an American soccer player who was among the list of College Soccer News Top 100 Incoming Freshman to Watch. He started college as a left back and in his first year he scored a goal that helped his team make a 3-0 win against Durham. Due to a mid season injury and surgery, he missed two games but regained the left back role upon his return. He also helped the Gamecocks make it to the NCAA tournament, but the team lost in the first round to Coastal Carolina.

His second year with the Gamecocks was unremarkable. The team had a weak offense and the defense allowed just under a goal per game. Alcala was transferred to midfield in 2004,when he was a junior. Feeling more comfortable in his new position, Alcala made 11 points in the season in three goals and five assists. He was then moved to forward to compensate for the number of midfielder already on the team. He played in a total of 19 games in this season. Considered as his best season so far, Alcala scored 23 points on 7 goals and 9 assists. The decision to put Alcala as forward helped the team score an 11 game winning streak for the season.

Alcala graduated in 2007 and shortly trialed with the Richmond Kickers and Crystal Palace FC USA. He played in 19 games in his rookie year as a forward or a midfielder. He scored his first professional goal in the game against Wilmington Hammerheads. In 2008, he signed up with Austin Aztec Premier Development team.
