As his surname, Papastathopoulos is too long to be fit on his club shirt, his first name is displayed instead, Sokratis. His teammates call him fondly as Papa.

The teams for whom Sokratis played includes AEK Athinai (2005), Niki Volos (2006) and AEK Athinai from 2006 to 2008. Till date, he has achieved 11 international caps.

This central defender had captained the Greece team which was the runners-up in 2006-07 UEFA European under 19 Championship. However, he missed the finals against Spain due to suspension. Due to his solid displays during the competition earned him a place as the team of the tournament.

Individually, Sokratis was named in the UEFA European U-19 Championship award, UEFA Team of the Tournament.

Other than that, he was also named in UEFA U-19 European Championships 2007 "Names to Note" as one of the best 11 players of the tournament. Moreover, he also won the Greek Young Footballer of the year in 2008.

Team-wise, Sokratis won the silver medal at the UEFA U-19 European Championship.
