Ivor Allchurch
Ivor Allchurch (1929-1997) was a Welsh professional footballer (soccer). He is known as the ‘Golden Boy of Welsh Football’. He has played for teams like Swansea Town and Newcastle United. Over his career, he amassed 691 games and scored 249 goals. He held the Wales caps record of 68 until it was broken in 1986. He came to international recognition when he played for Wales in the 1958 World Cup where he was instrumental in the team reaching the finals.
Allchurch was born in Swansea Wales. He turned pro playing for Swansea Town. He was spotted by Joe Skyes, who was a scout for Swansea. He started playing for the team in 1947 but he did not make his league debut till the season of 1950-1951. In 1958, Allchurch joined Newcastle United, he would later join Cardiff City. He returned to play for Swansea when he was 35 years old. Before retiring, he was signed with Worcester City. He also became a coach for Haverforwest County.
His playing style has been compared to that of Peter Doherty. He was a very talented footballer who is known for being able to move past players quickly. He was also known for having a very laidback playing style. He had a very strong left foot and was a very accurate shot. In 1966, he was awarded an MBE in recognition for his achievements in football. He was also inducted into the Welsh Football Hall of Fame. Allchurch died at the age of 67.
