Freddy Adu, born June 1989, is a professional American football (soccer) player. Adu and his family emigrated to the US when he was 8. In his career, he has played for Aris in Greece. Adu is a striker and an attacking midfielder. He has participated in the IMG Soccer Academy from 2002-1003. He is one of the youngest athletes in the US to sign for a professional contract, he was 14.
Adu was born in Tema, Ghana. He became a US citizen in 2003. He played for the United States National team, but he was not named in the 2010 World Cup team. He signed for DC United in 2004. He became the youngest player to appear in a Major League Soccer game in the same year that he was signed to DC. He substituted for a game against the San Jose Earthquakes. He is also one of the youngest scorers in MLS history when he scored in a game against MetroStars.
Adu was a member for the US National Teams U7, U20, and U23. He was the captain for the U20 team. He was also instrumental in helping the U23 team to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics. He scored his first international goal when he was 19 years old as a member of the US national team against Guatemala in the qualifier game for the 2010 World Cup.
