The Latvian Higher League is the top tier of Latvian football. It is organized by the Latvian Football Federation and is officially known as the LMT Virsliga as it is sponsored by Latvijas Mobilais Telefons.
The Latvian Higher League kicks off in April of each year and runs until early November of that year. No matches are played in winter because of the cold climate.
10 clubs comprise the Latvian Higher League. There are two rounds in the league. In the first round, each club plays all the other nine clubs twice, home and away. In the second round, there are two “mini leagues” with the top six clubs playing each other twice and the clubs from 7th to 10th playing each other twice.
At the end of he season, the club at the bottom of the Latvian Higher League get relegated to the second division automatically and are replaced by the champions of the second division. The club that finishes second from bottom plays a two-legged playoffs with the club that finishes second in the second division to decide the final place for the Latvian Higher League for the next season.
