Netherlands vs. Costa Rica: World Cup Betting Preview

It has been an incredible run to the quarter-finals for Costa Rica at Brazil 2014 but surely this is a step too far and I expect the Netherlands to advance to the last four with relative ease.

It has been an incredible run to the quarter-finals for Costa Rica at Brazil 2014 but surely this is a step too far and I expect the Netherlands to advance to the last four with relative ease.

Having topped a group containing three former World Cup winners in Italy, Uruguay and England, unbeaten in the process, Costa Rica have surprised everybody at the finals and huge credit must go to an unheralded group of players.

Manager Jorge Pinto has seen his squad flourish against all odds and Costa Rica survived their second round clash with Greece, somehow, despite being reduced to ten men.

The Greeks wasted a host of opportunities to put away the Central Americans in extra time and ultimately paid the price, Theofanis Gekas missing from the spot to send Costa Rica into raptures.

While Costa Rica have been afforded six days rest in between matches, they were fortunate in Recife and their upcoming opponents are unlikely to be as forgiving.

This could so easily, of course, have been an all-Central American encounter, the Netherlands coming back from the brink to down Mexico late on in their second round match.

A Klaas-Jan Huntelaar penalty and Wesley Sneijder winner, both goals coming in the dying moments, rescued Louis Van Gaal’s side and the Netherlands can build on that success.

Van Gaal’s men started course with the astonishing 5-1 thrashing of Spain and two more excellent victories followed in the group stage, first a come-from-behind triumph versus Australia and then an impressive display versus Chile.

That 2-0 win over the South Americans was achieved without the suspended Robin van Persie, but the Dutchman may have benefited from the rest and is tipped to fire on Saturday.

Whilst Costa Rica came out of the traps with three goals against Uruguay, it is just two in their subsequent trio of matches, including the goalless draw versus England, and I want to be with the Netherlands to win while keeping a clean sheet.

An early goal could well see them dictate the remainder and the Netherlands are prone to a fast start.
