World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has been appointed as the new manager of the Brazilian national team following Mano Menezes’ sacking last week.

The 64-year-old former Chelsea, Palmeiras and Portugal led A Selecao to glory at the 2002 World Cup where they defeated Germany 2-0 in the final.

Brazil’s 1994 World Cup winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has also been appointed as a technical assistant.

“Our sole commitment is to seek out and offer the best for our football and it is in this vein that we have chosen these two great champions, respected not just in our country but worldwide - Felipe Scolari and Carlos Alberto Parreira,” CBF president Jose Maria Marin told reporters.

Scolari’s appointment has been met with mixed responses, given the Brazilian recently departed Palmeiras before they were ultimately relegated.

The veteran manager is seen as someone who can handle the pressure of the job and takes over from Menezes, who saw Brazil fail at last year’s Copa America and fall short of Olympic gold at this year’s London games.
