Co-hosts Poland may have crashed out of the 2012 European Championships after a 1-0 loss to Czech Republic on Saturday but midfielder Jakub Błaszczykowski says they had some “wonderful moments” during the event.

Poland boss Franciszek Smuda resigned straight after the defeat, which ended the co-hosts’ campaign with two draws and a loss.

However Blaszczykowski pointed to some memorable moments including the penalty save in the opener against Greece and his strike against Russia.

“Of course, it’s difficult to assess things now but, all in all, there have been some good moments, wonderful moments, but we didn’t reach our target,” the Borussia Dortmund man said.

“The final marks will always be negative. What was positive was that we competed against everyone on equal terms.

“We have had plenty of wonderful moments with the fans at this tournament. It’s a pity it was so short and that we have already been knocked out.

“On behalf of the team, we are very, very grateful. We have to move on now. We have to think it over, but the experience that we gained here is essential.”

Meanwhile, Czech Republic completed a remarkable comeback after losing their opening game 4-1 to Russia and becoming the first team ever to top their group with a negative goal difference.

Czech boss Michal Bilek said: “I am glad we have qualified. I am really happy for my team. That is what is important. I don’t need to hear the supporters chanting my name.”
