English Premier League

The champions brushed aside Chelsea 3-1 on Sunday in a significant early result in the title race, although Fernando Torres may have stole the limelight after his incredible late miss. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s 100 per cent record ended after blowing a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Fulham.

Blackburn moved out of the drop zone with a memorable 4-3 win over Arsenal, which has eased the pressure on manager Steve Kean. Fulham’s draw with Manchester City moves them above West Bromwich who slumped to a dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Swansea.

Jose Mourinho was left fuming at Sami Khedira, who was sent off in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss at Levante which is a costly defeat early on. FC Barcelona’s 8-0 trouncing of Osasuna shows their intent for the new campaign with Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi firing, while Valencia and Betis kept up their 100 per cent records with wins over Gijon and Bilbao respectively.

Atalanta’s pre-season points deduction has them sitting last but they’ve actually claimed four points this season and are on their way out of last. Bologna have started the season poorly, with zero goals to their name and the weekend’s home loss to Lecce wasn’t good.

Bayern Munich moved two points clear at the summit after a 2-0 win at Schalke 04 on Manuel Neuer’s first return to his former club. The Bavarians are in fine form with Thomas Muller and Nils Petersen getting the goals on Sunday. Meanwhile, Werder Bremen have started well but could only draw at Nurnberg on Saturday, while champions Dortmund are struggling down in 11th after conceding twice late to lose 2-1 to Hannover 96.

Hamburg’s awful start to the season continued on the weekend and subsequently they’ve sacked coach Michael Oenning. Newly-promoted Augsburg are still winless but their 2-2 at Hertha was encouraging, while Freiburg haven’t started overly well, losing their fourth game of the season on Saturday.
