Manchester United clinched first place in Group C after a 1-1 draw with Valencia, but there were some worries for the Red Devils after the Spaniards had taken the lead. Meanwhile, Bursaspor grabbed their first ever Champions League point with a 1-1 draw against Rangers.

FC Copenhagen become the first ever Danish club to reach the knockout phase of the Champions League after a memorable 3-1 victory over Panathinaikos secured second spot in Group D. Barcelona, though, did them a favour beating Rubin Kazan 2-0, which meant the Danes were always going through. At least they did it in style, but they’ve got a tough task progressing beyond the round of 16.

On Didier Drogba’s return to Marseille, Chelsea’s perfect Champions League record was ruined after a 1-0 loss to OM. It also extends Chelsea’s recent poor run of form. Zilina finished the group stage pointless after a 2-1 loss to Spartak Moscow.

Real Madrid flexed their muscle ahead of the final 16 with a comprehensive 4-0 thrashing of AJ Auxerre. Karim Benzema found form against the French side with a hat-trick as Real emphasised their billing as one of the major threats for the Champions League trophy. Meanwhile, AC Milan slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat to managerless Ajax but the Italian Serie A leaders still progressed.

Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk sealed top spot and progress into the Champions League final 16 for the first time ever after a 2-0 victory over Sporting Braga. Shakhtar won their final three group games to storm home in this group. Elsewhere, Arsenal had a few hairy moments against Partizan Belgrade, but eventually did enough to get through with a 3-1 win at the Emirates.
