10. Graham Taylor
In 38 games, Taylor led the Three Lions to 18 wins and 7 losses. He took over from Sir Bobby Robson and failed to deliver England to the 1994 World Cup. Probably good enough for this list because everyone else was even more ridiculous!
09. Terry Venables
He lost just once during his tenure as England manager, which lasted 23 games. The problem was that he drew 11 as well. His only loss came to arch rivals Germany that saw England get knocked out of Euro’96. Too defensive for most, Venables was never as good a manager as he was a player.
08. Don Revie
In three years Revie led England to a 48.3% win rate, with 14 wins in 29 games. He was quite formidable as a manager and despite not having been able to win any major trophy with the team, he was one of the better tacticians in the team.
07. Sir Bobby Robson
Sir Bobby Robson had an 8 year long association with the England national team, from 1982 to 1990. This was the longest since Sir Alf Ramsey’s 9 years. He coached England for 95 games, winning 47 and drawing 30. He led England to the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals where they were undone by Diego Maradona’s Argentina, the eventual champions; and in the 1990 FIFA World Cup Semifinals where they were beaten by a Lothar Matthaus led West Germany, again the eventual champions.
06. Walter Winterbottom
For 16 years, Winterbottom took charge of the England national squad, and maintained an incredible record with a 56.1% win rate. He lost just 28 games but one of these was the infamous loss to the USA, in England’s first appearance at the FIFA World Cup. He was England’s manager in four consecutive world cups and didn’t win anything besides that either. Maybe there wasn’t any better choice but his record of matches will be hard to beat.
05. Sven Goran Eriksson
England’s first non-English manager, Sven Goran Eriksson gained fame from his days with SS Lazio and their run in the Serie A. However, his tenure wasn’t as successful as many might have imagined. Although he lost just 10 games and drew just 17 in his 67 games, his 59.7 winning percentage wasn’t enough to keep him in the job after the 2006 World Cup exit.
04. Ron Greenwood
A 60% win rate is incredible, especially when you’ve coached for 55 games. With just 12 draws and 10 losses, Greenwood was one of the most successful coaches for the Three Lions. He failed to get any silverware for the national team and that remains his biggest drawback.
03. Glenn Hoddle
He coached England for just 28 games and in that time, notched up 17 wins and 6 draws. However, for Hoddle, his biggest mistake was to go against the English FA. After helping England qualify for France’98, he removed Paul Gascoigne from the squad and became known for pulling his weight as a manager. Despite his performance as a manager, Hoddle was dismissed for non-footballing reasons and that was truly a sad day for English football.
02. Fabio Capello
He may have only been on the job for 33 games but the current England manager is the most successful club level coach of all time. Known for having won the league title with every single team he has ever coached, Capello has a 66.7% win rate, the highest of any England manager. With 22 wins and 5 draws, Capello remains behind Sir Alf Ramsey only and only because of the World Cup trophy that Ramsey has won.
01. Sir Alf Ramsey
The world cup was held at their home turf, England had never won it before and three controversy marred games later, England had been handed the World Cup trophy. However, that takes nothing away from the fact that England’s only international title came under Sir Alf Ramsey. He will thank the referees and linesman for his title but today, he has to be number one on this list because of his win.
