Spanish club Atletico Madrid have parted company with their coach Javier Aguirre after two and a half years.
The sacking came on Monday after their weekend’s defeat to Real Valladolid at the weekend. Atletico have not won a single match in 2009 in any competition and have slipped out of the top six this season.
Aguirre led Atletico to a top four finish in La Liga last season for the first time in over a decade but the run of oor results has seen him get his head chopped.
Speaking on his sacking to Cadena SER, the Mexican said:
“I am the first one to recognise that I am part of the problem. One must think about the future of the club and, above all, I want to say that this has been a gentleman’s agreement.
“It is the easiest thing for everyone, less traumatic. I have only have words of gratitude for the club and I am leaving with no grudges.
“I wish Abel all the luck in the world. He was doing very well with Castellon and is a good coach as well as a friend.”
“Besides, I am convinced that the team will finish in the Champions League positions.”
