Maguire was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in January 2020, just five months after signing him to the club from Leicester City.
He says that he is “extremely disappointed” but that he will continue to give it his all.
Last season, Maguire made eight starts in the Premier League. At present, he is currently rumored to be considering a move to West Ham.
Ten Hag said that he will announce the new captain after he has informed the players. An announcement is not expected until the start of their pre-season tour in New York on Thursday.
Maguire’s contract with Manchester United will not run out until 2025.
“After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain,” Maguire said on social media.
“He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.”
“I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.”
“Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date.”
“I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful - on and off the field. I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success.”
For their part, the club had this to say: “Everyone at Manchester United thanks Harry for his contribution as captain over the past three and a half years.”
Maguire’s future with United is still secured by his contract but whether or now he will stay to see it through the end is another question altogether.
