Lionel Messi scored his 16th goal for Ligue 1 this season during Paris St-Germain’s draw with Strasbourg with help from Kylian Mbappe’s pass.
The goal is his 496th in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues, breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s 495. It is also his 32nd for PSG and it may well be his last as he is expected to depart this summer after his contract expires.
Strasbourg’s goal was courtesy of Gameiro, keeping them safe from relegation for now.
PSG now moves past Saint-Etienne and Marseille’s record of 10 titles.
“This afternoon I watched the last day of the season in the Bundesliga and you can see that it is very difficult to win the league, any league,” said Christophe Galtier.
“The reigning champions in all European leagues have often had problems this season, so we appreciate what this means.”
“It is a title and we must not believe it is normal to win, even if we are Paris Saint-Germain.”
The title-sealing goal from Messi ensures that his time with the club will end on a more positive note than it was looking at the start of May.
The Argentinian captain was suspended for two weeks after he traveled to Saudi Arabia without explicit permission from the club.
His move and the subsequent suspension dampened fans’ reactions to Messi who booed him in his first match back. Security had to be stepped up at his home as fans chanted outside.
