Joan Laporta, FC Barcelona president, says that the club is the “home” of Argentinian captain and football superstar Lionel Messi.

Messi’s contract with Paris St-Germain is set to expire in the summer and although there are reports that Messi is considering a move to Saudi Arabia, there is also some hope that he will be swayed to play for his former club – Barcelona.

Between 2004 and 2021, he won 10 La Liga titles for the club. In an interview with Spain’s TV3, Laporta said that he can and will compete for anyone in order to sign Messi.

“History backs us, the feelings are too strong, we have 400 million fans around the world too,” he said.

Messi left Barcelona 2 years ago and moved to play for PSG. But he has since struggled to replicate the success he had with Barcelona in France. Just last weekend, he was booed by fans during PSG’s impressive 5-0 win against Ajaccio.

Laporta also says that there have been conversations between him and Messi and that he even congratulated Messi for his World Cup win last year.

“He is a Paris St-Germain player and we have to wait until the end of the season until it is over, and then we can talk more calmly about this,” Laporta added.

“With all due respect to Saudi Arabia, Barca is Barca, and it is home.”

Laporta’s comments come after Barcelona won their first La Liga win on Sunday.
