Vinicius Junior is the “most influential player in world football right now” according to his Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The Brazilian netted two first-half goals to erase Liverpool’s early 2-0 lead as the European champions rallied to claim a 5-2 win at Anfield in their UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg.

Vinicius Junior’s impact was significant towards Real keeping alive their Champions League title defence, having played a key part in their success last term.

The 22-year-old has scored six goals in seven Champions League games this season, taking his season tally to 15 in 32 games in all competitions, prompting praise from Ancelotti.

“Right now he’s the most influential player in world football,” the Italian said. “No other player has this consistency.”

Ancelotti was also eager to praise Luka Modric who assisted Eder Militao’s header for 3-2 early in the second half.

The Croatian also helped lead the counter-attack for Karim Benzema’s goal to make it 5-2.

“He’s the same Modric as always,” he said. “The best Modric you can see in a match: consistent, confident and great on the ball. In times of trouble, he’s been essential in getting us out of trouble.”

Real’s come-from-behind triumph reminded Ancelotti of last season’s semi-final victory over Manchester City.

City won the first leg in Manchester 4-3, before leading the second leg 1-0 in Madrid after Riyad Mahrez’s 73rd minute strike.

However, Los Blancos hit back with three goals in the final few minutes to clinch an unlikely spot in the final which they won 1-0 over Liverpool.

“I remembered the semi-final against Manchester City,” Ancelotti said. “It was inevitable that we’d have to suffer. We said to ourselves that we could struggle, but the important thing was to remain calm and keep our emotions under control.

“This is where the veterans really help a lot. Everyone showed composure because it was a long game.

“You keep cool by trusting in the quality you have. You have to prepare the team to stick to the strategy you have set out.”
