Long-time international footballer Gareth Bale announced his retirement from the sport on Monday following 18 seasons of playing.

33-year-old Bale played in the English Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton. He also played in La Liga for Real Madrid.

He also spent some time in the United States playing in Major League Soccer for the Los Angeles FC.

Bale also played for Wales in UEFA Euro Tournaments and the recently concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup which was held in Qatar.

“From my very first touch at Southampton to my last with LAFC and everything in between, shaped a club career that I have an immense pride, and gratitude for,” Bale wrote in a Twitter post.

“Playing for and captaining my country 111 times has truly been a dream come true. To show my gratitude to all of those that have played their part along this journey feels like an impossibility.”

“I feel indebted to many people for helping to change my life and shape my career in a way I couldn’t have ever dreamed of when I first started out at 9 years old.”

The Welshman started playing football professionally for Southampton when he was just 16 years old. He later moved to Tottenham and then to Real Madrid.

While he was with Madrid, he helped them win the FIFA Club World Cup three times. When he played in the MLS for Los Angeles, he helped them win the 2022 MLS Cup.

Throughout his club career, he made 394 appearances, scoring 141 goals.
