Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football after sitting out France’s 2022 World Cup campaign where they finished runners-up.

Benzema, who turned 35 on Monday, confirmed the decision following Sunday’s final which he watched from afar.

“I’ve made the efforts and mistakes that were necessary for me to be where I am today and I’m proud of it! I’ve written my story and ours comes to an end,” Benzema said in a post on Instagram on Monday.

The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner missed the World Cup due to a thigh injury sustained on the eve of the event in training.

Benzema had been under an injury cloud in the weeks leading up to that, with the Real Madrid striker joining Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Christopher Nkunku in missing the event.

The forward’s international career ends with 37 goals from 97 games, having spent years exiled from the side following his alleged role in a sex-tape scandal.

Benzema would come back into the international fold at Euro 2020 when Didier Deschamps recalled him. He was the top scorer for Les Bleus with four goals at Euro 2020.
