Lionel Messi may have dodged the media after Sunday’s World Cup triumph for Argentina but he revealed his pure joy on social media after the final.

Messi achieved the ultimate goal of his decorated career, lifting the World Cup for Argentina as captain after a penalty shootout victory over France where he scored twice and also converted a spotkick.

The triumph is Argentina’s first since 1986 when Diego Maradona led the side to glory, with Messi matching that feat to achieve pure greatness.

“I dreamt about it so many times, I wanted it so much that I still can’t believe it,” he posted on Instagram.

“Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim.

“The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians… We did it!!!”

The 36-year-old spoke briefly to TyC Sports after the game, hinting at his future with the national team.

“I enjoy being in the national team, the group, I want to continue living a few more games being world champion,” he said.

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni was quick to heap praise on Messi after his brilliant display, capped by winning the Golden Ball.

“It’s such a huge pleasure to coach him and his team-mates,” Scaloni said.

“Everything he transmits to his teams, it’s unparalleled, something I’ve never seen before. He gives so much to his team-mates.”
